wool wall

TYPE Field Project
YEAR2022 - Ongoing

PROJECT INFO

Wool Wall (Ullarveggur) is a prefabricated modular wall system that we are developing for a new generation of natural & sustainable buildings in Iceland.

PROJECT UPDATES

March 2023: We are getting ready for our next field trip to Iceland. Below is an overview of the final wool wall module materials & assembly steps that we will be putting into action on a full-scale module together with the help of natural builder Helgi Sigurðsson in the spring:

December 2022: Our partners at K Horizon recently completed a series of drawings of the current wool wall module design. The assembly of a full-scale module (50cm wide x 2.5m high) as well as work on a small test building are being planned for early 2023 on location in Iceland.

April 2022: We carried out a day-long field trip to Halla Steinolfsdottir's farm in the Búðardalur region of Northwest Iceland. Sourcing Icelandic clay was the final step in material procurement for our ongoing wool wall project - a prefabricated modular wall system for a new generation of natural & sustainable buildings in Iceland.

It is not easy to find clay in Iceland due to the island's relatively young geology.
Halla's clay (which is only about 15,000 years old) shows considerable binding strength and should make a fine earthen plaster.
Halla's clay will be used to finish the modules with an earthen plaster. Initial plaster tests are pointing towards a mix ratio of 1 part clay to 3 parts sand.

Other materials sourced during this field visit to Iceland include washed raw wool from Blönduós (for insulation on the exterior side) as well as turf panels from the Skagafjörður region (to add thermal mass to the interior of the wall).
